Why Sutro

At Sutro, our main goal is to make water safe. We feel strongly that safe water, be it drinking, agriculture, pool, or spa water, is vital to a thriving world.  That’s what drives all our decisions and every day, we try and think of better ways to make water safe.
Along with that noble goal, we want to make the experience of using Sutro products as simple, safe, and seamless as possible. We have written about How Simple, Safe, and Seamless Drove Our Design Process as well as Insights into Crowdsourced Pool and Spa Measurements and Chemicals.
All of these posts reveal a glimpse of what makes us tick. They also give some reasons as to why you should use Sutro products and services but we have heard from lots of potential customers that we need to do a better job of sharing our vision of the world.
The question all of them want us to answer is simply -- Why Sutro?
Before we jump into why we are the simple, safe, and seamless way to measure, monitor, and recommend treatments for your water, let’s answer some of the common questions we get.
Does it need to be secured to anything?
No. You can let the smart monitor float around your pool or spa. We do recommend thatyou attach it to a ladder or something but it’s not required.
What are the additional costs associated with the unit?
We have a yearly subscription of $99 after the first year. That covers the monitoring and the monthly cartridges.
Can I take it out of the pool or spa?
You can take it out of the pool or spa but we don’t recommend doing that. We want to make sure that we’re testing your water regularity and the best way to do that is to keep it in the water.
If you do need to take it out, that should not be a problem. The Smart Monitor knows that it’s out of the water so it will let us (and you) know.

Which chemicals does this work with and how do I know?
We work with all sorts of chemicals. Our database of chemicals is expanding daily. When you first start using the Smart Monitor, we ask you to scan your chemicals so we know which ones you are using. If they are not in our database, then we’ll put them in. Since we use an Artificial Intelligent recommendations engine, our system can adjust to whatever chemicals you may have.
Rest assured that whatever chemicals you are using, they will work for us.
What is your return policy and warranty?
We offer a 45-day risk-free trial of the monitor. If you don’t like it for any reason, you can ship it back and we’ll refund you the full amount.
What if I only have my pool open half or part of the year?
We’re still working on how to handle that. Right now, our $99 subscription is for the full year. That includes monitoring and monthly cartridges.

Complex on the Inside

It takes a lot of internal complexity to make taking a water measurement a reality. The reason being is that we use reagents to get the most accurate results that are possible. We use our partner LaMotte’s reagents to ensure that we have the gold standard for water testing. LaMotte has been testing water for over 100 years and is a trusted source for the EPA and waterworks around the world. Our measurement technology is based on the exact same chemistry used in their Spin Touch.

Simple On The Outside

Chemistry Tests

Our chemistry is done via a flow cell and a cartridge full of reagents. If you have ever used a liquid water test kit, then you know what we’re doing -- the same way that you take a sample of water, drop color in the cell, mix it up, and then compare colors - is the same thing we do. Only on a microscopic level. For us, micro means 1/1,000 the volume of water you would use in a normal test kit. It’s a simple process made complex by all the little things that could go wrong like bubbles, dirt, scratched flow cell, etc. (BTW, all of which have gone wrong on us).

Accurate and Consistent Measurements Means Safer Water

Ravi knows from his pool boy days that a pool or spa’s water will usually go bad if it has not been tested regularly. It’s the reason that you’ve probably walked into a pool store. The reason for that is simple -- untreated water will grow all sorts of critters;. That’s why we decided to test your water three times a day to ensure that we have the most consistent and accurate measurements to feed our recommendations engine. Usually, you may test your water once a week, and act upon that data. We test it 21x more than you do. That means that we’ve tested the amount you’d test in about 5 months in 1 week.
We know that taking water measurements is a hassle and is one of the main reasons to hate having a pool. We don’t want you to hate your pool because of something that can easily be done using technology. Our whole motto: Love Your Pool (or Spa) Again centers around ensuring that you can do that. Everything we do revolves around making it simple, safe, and seamless to take care of your water. We want your pool experience to be focused on the joy and excitement that your friends and family get when they come over for a swim. That’s why you purchased your house with a pool (or spa), right? A Seamless, White-Glove Experience

At Sutro, we strive to provide the best experience. Part of that experience is making sure that each and every one of our customers are taken care of if they have a problem.
We’re dedicated to providing the best customer service we can and that’s why we have our Sutro Partners program, which is for pool and spa retailers as well as professionals.
Our goal is to have a Sutro partner within a call or drive to all of our customers. This is a big and challenging goal but we understand that when your pool is green or your spa is foaming, no amount of us being on the phone will make it better. Sometimes, a pool and spa problem requires a professional to be on site and we intend to have a trained and trusted network of such professionals ready and able to help our customers. It’s a bold goal but we feel that a true white-glove experience requires local professionals that can physically go to a customer pool or spa. We’re also willing to do hard things, it did take us 5 years to launch a product.
